When it pushes outward, the diaphragm forces nearby air molecules closer together, creating a high-pressure region around the loudspeaker. (Remember, as stated earlier, that sound is a matter of fluctuations in pressure.) The diaphragm is then pushed backward in response, freeing up an area of space for the air molecules. While it is difficult to regulate household noise through legislation, outside noise-producing activities are often restricted by by-laws. They may therefore become irreparably damaged by large noise doses.

An undisturbed object continues to remain in its state of equilibrium. The absolute rule is that form (visual) must follow function (sound). As opposed to a conventional design, this arrangement produces an extra set of strong reflections that further confuse the sound. By lightly touching a str. (i.e. a stopped str.), at its centre and then bowing it, it can be made to produce (in a peculiar silvery tone-quality) its 2nd harmonic; by touching it at a 3rd of its length it will similarly produce its 3rd harmonic, etc. (Harmonics are notated in str. parts as an ‘o’ above the note. ‘Natural’ harmonics are those produced from an open str.; ‘artificial’ harmonics those produced from a stopped str.) The normal transmission of sound is through the air.

This rarifies the air inside the body, which then sucks the 'lump' of air back in. Because such a wave travels by disturbing the particles of a material medium, sound waves cannot travel through a vacuum. Different instruments differ in the relative strengths of the various overtones, and that is what gives the instruments different timbres. Oh, and if you have an under-saddle pickup, that too will filter the sound (before it gets to the bridge) and thus affect the tone (the sounds of a uke unplugged and plugged are quite different). If one then heats the tungsten plate hot enough so that its thermionic emission of electrons balances the positive current of cesium ions, the result is a low-pressure neutral plasma with no imbedded electrical currents – a so-called “quiescent plasma” – hence the name of the apparatus.

Just as in the case of the refracted wave, the wavefront must also have a constant phase relation to the incident wave, and so its trace must be the same as the traces of the incident and refracted waves, and move with the same trace velocity. This would explain the advantages of seasoning, as amorphous material readily absorbs and releases moisture, while crystalline material does not.
