I had never heard of Calvinism before that and I didn't know what to think of it, so I read Arthur Pink's The Sovereignty of God and a couple of other titles on the subject with a desire to understand it and to know whether it was scriptural or not. Thus, according to Calvinism, there is an entire chain of necessary and sufficient CONDITIONS one must meet in order to be "saved" or obtain "SALVATION": if and only if one believes will one be joined to Christ's body and participate in His blood and His fulfillment of the law; if and only if one is thus joined to Christ will one be justified or declared legally righteous; if and only if one is thus justified will one be adopted and volitionally sanctified and persevere in Christ; if and only if one thus perseveres will one be physically glorified and receive a transformed resurrected body and spend eternity with Christ.

The most remarkable feature is the fact that the miracle took place in a completely un-Catholic atmosphere. It teaches that fallen humanity is morally and spiritually unable to follow God or escape their condemnation before him and that only by divine intervention in which God must change their unwilling hearts can people be turned from rebellion to willing obedience. The largest number of congregations is in Saxony, Berlin, Brandenburg, Lower Saxony, Bavaria, Thuringia, and Baden-Württemberg.

My wife, who is also Catholic, was baptised in the Methodist Church. No explanation is needed for these verses. The truth of the whole matter is this: religious toleration has been placed on the statute books of modern nations; the civil power has severed itself from the ecclesiastical; the governing classes have grown alarmingly indifferent to things spiritual; the educated classes are largely Rationalistic; the working classes are widely infected with anti-religious socialism; a prolific press daily and periodically preaches the gospel of Naturalism overtly or covertly to countless eager readers; in many lands Christian teaching is banished from the public schools; and revealed religion is fast losing that power of fashioning politics, culture, home life, and personal character which it used to exercise for the benefit of Christian states.

In the same period, John Knox spread the Calvinist message in Scotland. He liked to claim to his students later in his life that he was just the son of a peasant, and the grandson of a peasant - an ordinary background of which much would be made in due course by Lutheran hagiography. They were playing near a large rock, close to a wooded section of the field, shouting merrily to one another in carefree fun. If I were to start a theological Ephesians fan club, more Calvinists would show up than anyone else.

After looking at these beliefs, if someone claimed to be Augustinian, I think it is rather obvious that they would not be a Calvinist or a Protestant, but Catholic. Not only was the founder of Calvinism, John Calvin, a great deceiver, but he was also a murderer! That always struck me as odd because I had thought that this existential crisis over one's salvation was peculiar to Methodists (after all, we're the ones who insist that "without holiness no one will see the Lord").

The early Baptists in England were divided into the General Baptists and the Particular Baptists, referring to how they viewed Christ's atonement, as to whether it was for all men (general) or only for the elect (particular). Among other things, the theses attacked the brisk business in indulgences preached by the Dominican preacher Johann Tetzel (1465-1519), which was being grossly abused. The Apostle Paul instructs the Church: ‘Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them’ (Romans 16.17).

After the 1526 Battle of Mohács, the Hungarian people were disillusioned by the ability of the government to protect them and turned to the faith they felt would infuse them with the strength necessary to resist the invader. This irrational, spiritual concept ironically gave rise to a very rational brand of economic activity. Go there and live under their governments, and then tell us all about the wonders of "common grace"!
