There are two versions of John Cassavetes’ postnoir masterpiece--first edited and released in 1976, then recut and re-released in a shorter version two years later after the first one failed miserably at the box office. (Lamentably, the second version failed as well.) It’s hard to choose between them, but I tend to opt for the earlier, longer, and, until recently, harder to see of the two versions, both of which are now available in Criterion’s excellent Cassavetes box set.
